My Journey with Weight: From Struggle to Strength
If someone had told me as a child that gaining weight was easy, I would have laughed, perhaps even frowned, because, for most of my early life, I fought an uphill battle just to put on a few kilos.
I was always on the thinner side, nearly 10 kgs below my ideal body weight, and the world didn’t hesitate to remind me. The whispers, the stares, the harsh words "anorexic," they called me. I was not just struggling with my body; I was struggling with my health. Constant fatigue, frequent illnesses, and a never-ending cycle of exhaustion became my reality.
Desperate for answers, I buried myself in books, research papers, and every bit of information I could find online. I needed to understand my body. Why couldn’t I gain weight? Why was my body failing me despite my best efforts? That’s when I made a decision that would change my life. I pursued a master’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition. And then, something incredible happened.
I cracked the code. I gained weight. But not just any weight. I did it the right way, the healthy way. For the first time, I felt strong, energetic, and in control. It was a victory, one that I thought would last forever.
But life had other plans
During my last corporate year, something I had never imagined possible happened. The long hours, the relentless stress, and a lifestyle heavily dependent on packaged, ultra-processed foods started creeping into my routine. Biscuits became my quick fix, ice creams and sodas my guilty pleasure, ready-to-eat meals my survival kit. In just 8 months, I had gained 10 kgs, not the healthy kind, but the weight that came with sluggishness, inflammation, and an overwhelming sense of imbalance.
I was shocked. I was a dietitian, someone who taught others how to eat right. And yet, here I was, caught in the same trap I had warned so many about. That’s when I had an epiphany.
We, as dietitians, spend so much time advocating wholesome, nourishing foods that we sometimes forget the reality of the modern world. We live in a time where nearly everything we consume contains chemicals, additives, heavy metals, and toxins. People are bombarded with conflicting advice, fad diets, and unrealistic weight-loss promises. Others try to vilify all packaged foods, leaving consumers lost in the chaos of "healthy" vs. "harmful."
